Assignment
A design for the northern entrance to the Amstelpark in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Design
The northern periphery of the Amstelpark is situated on the A10 ring road encircling Amsterdam. Passing motorists are able to see a line of trees, but cannot imagine that an expansive city park hides behind them. The companies located on the Zuidas, a bit further on, are better at promoting themselves: they display illuminated logos on their office façades to draw the passing motorists’ attention.
What the Amstelpark actually needed was not only an entrance but also an identity. An eye-catching entrance that unmistakably and surprisingly conveyed to pedestrians as well as motorists on the ring road what they could expect in the space behind the crash barriers.
Obviously, the design was not a subtle, decorative park gate but a striking statement.
