Design for the cornice of Bigshops shopping centre and the boundaries of the rooftop park, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
Design
The shopping centre is almost 1 km long. One single element was designed to serve as the façade’s cornice as well as the parapet for the shopping centre’s rooftop park: a robust steel balustrade. The balustrade marks the height of the building and is transparent, so that the park behind it is clearly visible. The railing is 40 cm wide, making it safe to lean on it while enjoying the view across the port of Rotterdam. The balustrade was designed in a continuous line in order to emphasize the considerable length of the building.
